Abstract

This article explores the nuanced use of mythological allusion in literature as a means to enrich narratives and engage readers on multiple levels. Through the examination of various literary works, including examples from Agatha Christie's detective fiction, O. Henry's short stories, and John Fowles' psychological novels, the essay elucidates how authors incorporate elements from ancient myths to deepen themes, enhance symbolism, and establish connections to the collective unconscious. By drawing parallels between characters, situations, and themes in their stories and the broader mythological context, writers invite readers into a world where ancient tales and contemporary narratives intertwine, offering insights into the human condition and the timeless struggles of humanity. Ultimately, the essay underscores the enduring power of storytelling to transcend time and space, highlighting mythological allusion as a potent tool for illuminating universal truths and fostering a deeper understanding of the human experience within the literary landscape.
