Abstract

. As reading is one of the most important means of obtaining information and it has a significant place in the life of an educated person, this article deals with the role of reading skill in learning a foreign language. This article delves into the multifaceted role of reading skills in the process of mastering a second language. Reading enhances vocabulary acquisition by exposing learners to a wide array of words and phrases in context. Through encountering these linguistic elements repeatedly in different contexts, learners solidify their understanding and usage, thereby expanding their lexicon.

It comprehension exercises stimulate critical thinking and analytical skills. As learners engage with various texts, they are prompted to decipher meanings, infer intentions, and evaluate arguments, thus honing their cognitive abilities. Moreover, reading serves as a gateway to cultural understanding. By exploring literature, news articles, and other written materials in the target language, learners gain insights into the customs, traditions, and societal norms of the culture associated with that language. Reading fosters language fluency by providing exposure to authentic language usage and structure. Through repeated exposure to grammatical structures, sentence patterns, and idiomatic expressions, learners internalize the language's nuances and develop a natural flow in their speech and writing.

The role of reading in learning a foreign language cannot be overstated. It serves as a cornerstone for vocabulary expansion, critical thinking development, cultural awareness, and language fluency, making it an indispensable tool for language learners worldwide.
